Materials Explained: HDPE, CPP & Rice Paper
When it comes to protecting your vinyl collection, not all sleeve materials are created equal.
At Vinyl Storage Solutions, we carefully select materials that provide long-term protection, excellent clarity, and archival-safe performance. Understanding the differences between HDPE, CPP, and rice paper can help you choose the right sleeve for your collection and understand why these materials are trusted by collectors, archivists, and preservation professionals around the world.
Quick Comparison
| Material | Used In | Key Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| HDPE | Inner Sleeves | Low friction, archival safe, non-abrasive |
| Rice Paper | Inner Sleeves | Anti-static properties, reduces dust attraction |
| CPP | Outer Sleeves | Crystal clear, durable, archival safe |
What Is HDPE?
HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) is a smooth, durable plastic commonly used in premium archival inner sleeves.
Unlike traditional paper sleeves, HDPE does not shed fibers, generate paper dust, or create unnecessary friction against the record surface. This helps reduce the risk of micro-scratches while keeping records cleaner over time.
Because of its smooth surface and archival-safe properties, HDPE has become the preferred material for many collectors seeking long-term protection.
Benefits of HDPE
✔ Smooth, low-friction surface
✔ Helps reduce the risk of micro-scratches
✔ Does not shed fibers or paper dust
✔ Archival safe for long-term storage
✔ Durable and tear-resistant
Used In
- Classic Inner Sleeves
- Rice Paper Inner Sleeves
- Archival Pro Inner Sleeves
What Is Rice Paper?
Despite the name, the rice paper used in premium record sleeves is not traditional paper.
In modern archival inner sleeves, a thin anti-static rice paper layer is sandwiched between two layers of HDPE. This construction combines the durability and smoothness of HDPE with improved static dissipation.
Static electricity can attract dust and debris to the record surface. By helping reduce static buildup, rice paper sleeves can help keep records cleaner during storage and playback.
Benefits of Rice Paper
✔ Helps dissipate static buildup
✔ Reduces dust attraction
✔ Improves handling and insertion
✔ Supports long-term record preservation
✔ Works together with HDPE for maximum protection
Why We Use It
Our inner sleeves combine an anti-static rice paper insert with two HDPE layers to create a smooth, durable, and archival-safe storage solution.
This multi-layer construction helps:
- Reduce static and dust attraction
- Minimize friction during insertion and removal
- Protect against debris and surface wear
- Support long-term archival storage
A semi-translucent front panel also allows you to view coloured vinyl and picture discs without removing the record from the sleeve.
Archival Certification
Our HDPE and rice paper inner sleeves meet the Photographic Activity Test (PAT) standard in accordance with ISO 18916, confirming they are safe for long-term archival storage.
What Is CPP?
CPP (Cast Polypropylene) is the premium material used in our outer sleeves.
Chosen for its exceptional clarity and durability, CPP delivers a crystal-clear finish that allows album artwork to be displayed without the haze or cloudiness often found in lower-quality sleeves.
CPP also provides excellent resistance to tearing, creasing, moisture, and everyday handling, making it an ideal material for protecting record jackets.
Benefits of CPP
✔ Crystal clear appearance
✔ High-gloss finish
✔ Excellent tear resistance
✔ Resists creasing and clouding
✔ Helps protect against dust and moisture
✔ Archival safe for long-term storage
Why We Use CPP
Our outer sleeves are designed to enhance the appearance of your collection while helping protect jackets from:
- Dust
- Scuffs
- Shelf wear
- Moisture
- Everyday handling
Used in applications where optical clarity and surface smoothness are critical, CPP provides a premium presentation while maintaining long-term durability.
Archival Certification
Our CPP outer sleeves have passed the Photographic Activity Test (PAT) in accordance with ISO 18916.
This ensures they are safe for long-term archival storage and will not cause album artwork, inks, or printed materials to discolour over time.
Why Archival Safety Matters
Many collectors focus on protecting records from dust and scratches, but long-term storage materials matter just as much.
Materials that are not archival safe can potentially transfer chemicals, discolour artwork, or degrade over time.
That's why we use materials that have passed the Photographic Activity Test (PAT), a widely recognized standard used by archives, museums, and preservation professionals.
By choosing archival-safe sleeves, you're investing in the long-term preservation of both your records and their artwork.
